Fiction Ke Safeer: Parveen Malik on translating Arundhati Roy's The God of Small Things

 

Parveen Malik is a writer, translator, journalist, and playwright. She is the author of two Punjabi short story collections: Kī Janañ Maiñ Kaun (1984) and Nikkē Nikkē Dukh (2004), and an Urdu novel titled Ādhi Aurat (1996). Her autobiography Kasīyan da Pāni (2016) not only tells her own story, but also narrates the aftermath of partition in Punjab. Malik has numerous works of translation to her name and has worked across three languages: Punjabi, Urdu, and English.  In 1999 her Urdu translation of Arundhati Roy's The God of Small Things (1997), titled Sisaktē Log, was published by Aks Publications. She has also translated Quratulain Hyder’s Urdu novel, Dilruba-Aglē Jannam Mohē Bitīyā na Kījo (2008), into Punjabi.

 

Parveen Malik holds an M.A. in Journalism from Punjab University. She has been a member of the Punjabi Adabi Board since 1992 and became the first female Secretary of the Board in 2009. The Government of Pakistan awarded her the Tamgha-e-Imtiaz in 2017.
